RAMDisk – A virtual disk in RAM:
If for some reason, you need a new storage space with amazing speed, you don’t have to invest in a 300 € Firewire hard disk or a 3.0 USB key.
Instead, you can be smart with your money using RAMDisk, a small app that will create a virtual disk directly on your computer’s RAM. Its creation is very easy and once installed, you won’t notice any difference with a traditional hard disk.
On the other hand, the difference speed-wise will be phenomenal as all you will save in it will be stock on your RAM. The access time will be on average 10 time faster than from your hard drive. Naturally, you still have to take into consideration the fact that RAM is volatile – meaning that the RAM is deleted when you turn off your computer.
But don’t worry, RAMdisk designers though of everything, and RAMDisk authorizes a copy to be made on the hard drive before the computer shut down. Unfortunately, in case of crash you can kiss your data goodbye - but still not a bad function to have most of the time.
Another thing to keep in mind, if for example, you have 8Gb of RAM, by creating a 4Gb RAMdisk will only leave you with 4Gb of RAM for your other apps. This free version of RAMdisk gives you a maximum 4Gb virtual disk. If you need more, you will need to buy the full version.
All in all, I would say that RAMdisk is very useful if you need to gain speed on your computer. I don’t think that it would be a good idea to stock important documents on it, but directing your Internet cache to it, will accelerate considerably your browsing speed.
