BOXCRYPTOR or how to secure your files in the Cloud :
Synchronizing your files in the Cloud is good, but ensuring their confidentiality (hello NSA) is better. If, like me, you don’t have a Ph.D in public-key cryptography, then Boxcryptor is the app you need.
This software, with a clear interface accessible to all, enables you to encrypt your files locally before synchronizing them in the cloud storage service of your choice. BoxCryptor supports all major storage providers such as Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft Skydrive, Sugarsync, etc..
BoxCryptor uses AES-256 and RSA encryption algorithms, which are the most frequently used and the safest algorithms for "top secret" information today.
In addition, to ensure greater security, BoxCryptor does not store your password. As a consequence, you MUST memorize it at the risk of permanently losing access to your files.
At installation, BoxCryptor offers you to choose between an "off-line" or an "online" account. The "off-line" account implies that "you are responsible for managing your key file."
If you are lost at this point (as I am) it means that you are part of the un-geek community, so I strongly suggest you to leave quietly BoxCryptor manage for you, opting for the "online" account.
The "online" account has the added benefit of allowing you to share your encrypted files directly with other BoxCryptor users.
BoxCryptor then creates a virtual drive accessible directly from your Windows Explorer, where your various folders (Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.) will appear.
From there, you just have to move your files in the BoxCryptor player and then encrypt them with a simple right-click ("Encrypt" option).
Or even simpler, you file will automatically be encrypted if you move it directly in one of your already encrypted folders.
An un-geek forewarned is forearmed ;)
Boxcryptor is an easy-to-use encryption software optimized for the cloud. It allows the secure use of cloud storage services without sacrificing comfort. Boxcryptor supports all major cloud storage providers (such as Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft SkyDrive, SugarSync) and supports all the clouds that use the WebDAV standard (such as Cubby, Strato HiDrive, and ownCloud). With Boxcryptor your files go protected to your cloud provider and you can enjoy peace of mind knowing that your information cannot fall into the wrong hands.
Here is how it works:
Boxcryptor creates a virtual drive on your computer that allows you to encrypt your files locally before uploading them to your cloud or clouds of choice. It encrypts individual files - and does not create containers. Any file dropped into an encrypted folder within the Boxcryptor drive will get automatically encrypted before it is synced to the cloud. To protect your files, Boxcryptor uses the AES-256 and RSA encryption algorithms.
