Picnik – Photo editing in the cloud:
If you like touching up pictures, you probably work on software that is installed on your computer. One example would be Photoshop, which have a very expensive license. Another possibility would be using tools like Gimp, which sure is an open-source software but difficult to come to grips with. Let’s not forget the free Paint.net, which is really great in all matters, although it’s a little too greedy in RAM as far I am concerned.
But let’s be honest: why would you want to bother yourself with this kind of software on your computer if you can just as well use a web app that is able to perform (almost ^^) the same miracles, easy to handle, works on all machines (Windows, Mac and Linux), and is 100% online?
Its name? Picnik!
The first step in working with Picnik consists in importing a pic to be touched up. You can import it either from your computer or right from the web (URL, social websites like Myspace, Flickr, Yahoo Mail, Facebook, Picasa, etc.) or take a picture with your webcam! Cheeeeeeese!
Once you’ve imported it, all you have to do is unleash your creativity! Picnik is made up of different tabs. The edit tab allows making basic touch-ups of your picture. Crop, resize, adjust colors and contrast, sharpen, eliminate red-eye, everything is possible!
As soon as your pic starts looking right, go check the create tab in which you’ll find a bunch of effects, masks and other touch-ups you can apply.
There are features for every taste: pixelation, focal zoom (speed effect), sepia, grey level, color temperature, deformation, puzzle, … you name it.
Picnik also allows you to add text to your picture, and also stickers with different themes (Valentine’s Day, Independence Day, X-Mas, St. Patrick’s Day, just whatever you may want).
The touch-up section is my personal favorite. Here you can for instance delete the brilliance or stains of your pic, make people blush, tan them, change their eye color, whiten their teeth, pink their lips, or whatever. It’s just to much to name it all here.
Picnik also offers a choice of frames to sublime your pictures. And once you’ve completed your piece of art, you can export it! Either you directly download it onto your computer, or you send it to your Flickr account, or by email, or to Facebook, or or or… the choice is yours! Latest feature: create your own greeting cards and have Picnik mail them for you!
All this is 100% free of charge, but you should know that Picnik also offers a paid account for less than 2€ a month that offers you more effects, storage space for your pictures, more stickers etc.
I think you got the message: Picnik is an awesome tool for all of you touch-uppers-to-be out there who don’t want to bother using a complex tool but still expect a fine result.
Give it a shot, you’ll love it!
